Protect against Phishing

Phishing means accidental visit to a website which resembles like the original site. This is infact a big threat to those who are connected to Internet as users are simply duped by stealing their credentials. The process will kick start with the hackers sending fraudulent emails (which may look similar with all details including the signatory part) to several IDs by guess work. Nearly, 95% of these emails will be addressed in the name of several prominent banks like ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and others. It will request users to visit a provided web address and login by entering their username and password. These data will be stored as plain text in the hackers web server.

Initially, customers were not warned by bankers against these threats and as a result many of them lost their money through this route. But nowadays, banks have posted warning notices on their websites and new customers are aware against Phishing. Moreover, several print and television medias also played an important role in exposing this threat.

In order to protect yourselves against phishing, you have to follow the following steps

(1) Never click on a link which requests you to enter username and password to login.

(2) Visit banking related websites directly from your browser namely Internet Explorer or FireFox.

Note: Internet Explorer 8 has a feature to protect you against Phishing.

Download IE8 for Windows XP and get clarified on common myths

IE is by far the largest used browser.   However, one of the common myths around IE is the security, performance and that it doesn’t support latest web standards.  Many of the other browsers have openly mentioned in the past that using IE6 is so 2006 days, download blah blah etc., advertising for their browser and thereby conveniently hiding the subsequent IE releases.   It strange how people still compare IE6 after which there are 2 releases with all the modern browsers of today.

The reality of the fact is that after IE6 there have been 2 releases on IE.  The IE 7 and now the latest IE8.  IE 8 is by far the best browser in terms of standards and compliance.  Many web developers out there don’t realize that IE provides great help for web development and enhances the web experience to a great extent.

One of the common patterns, we see is that people use Windows XP and have IE6 that came along with it.  Post that the other browsers such as Firefox started picking up momentum and people started using that.  In that process, they didn’t actually realize that IE also released IE 7 for Windows XP (which shipped as the default IE version with Windows Vista) and now IE 8 that can be installed on XP, Vista and Windows 7.

You can watch the IE 8 Video features at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/videos.aspx?mname=howto_compatibility

Also, for developers and IT Professions, we did a few screen casts that can be viewed at http://www.microsoft.com/india/webcasts/ondemand.aspx

The best feature I like as a web developer in IE is the Developer Toolbar that helps me accomplish tons of testing.  F12 is your key if you are a web developer and it gives you various techniques for enhancing your web development experience.

In the past, I have also written about how, the IE8’s tab control and process work and session sharing information at http://geekswithblogs.net/ranganh/category/9470.aspx

If you are running IE6 on Windows XP, I would recommend to upgrade to the latest version of IE8 and enjoy the benefits.  You can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&familyid=341c2ad5-8c3d-4347-8c03-08cdecd8852b

For Windows Vista, you can install it from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx

If you are running Windows 7 Beta, RC or the RTM version, then you don’t have to do anything since IE8 ships as default with it.

And for the statisticians, here is a report on IE’s protection against malware http://nsslabs.com/test-reports/NSS%20Labs%20Browser%20Security%20-%20Socially%20Engineered%20Malware%20Q3%202009.pdf

The excerpt from the above report, is here below

  1. Internet Explorer 8 caught 81% of the live threats, an exceptional score which surpassed the next best browser (Firefox 3) by a 54% margin. Windows Internet Explorer 8 improved 12% between Q1 and Q2 tests, evidence of concerted efforts Microsoft is making in the SmartScreen technology.
  2. Firefox 3 caught 27% of live threats, far fewer than Internet Explorer 8. It was, however, the best among products utilizing the Google SafeBrowsing API. (Note: Firefox 3.5 was not stable enough to be tested during the course of this test. A patch has subsequently become available to address the stability issue. We were able to manually verify that the protection was identical between versions 3.0.11 and 3.5).
  3. Safari 4 caught 21% of live threats. Overall protection varied greatly, with two short periods of severe dips.
  4. Chrome 2 caught just 7% of live threats an 8% drop from the previous test.
  5. Opera 10 Beta caught a mere 1% of live threats, providing virtually no protection against socially engineered malware. In our test bed validation, we verified there was effectively no difference between Opera 9 and Opera 10 Beta.

Happy Browsing !!!

Kentico CMS 4.1 was released and the Trees for bugs initiative launched

The new Kentico CMS version 4.1 was released delivering all that was promised, plus adding some "extras" – the "Trees for bugs” initiative and the announcement of 7-Days Bug Fixing policy. Since today, for each bug found by our clients in the 4.1 version of Kentico CMS, one tree will be planted. We also promise that each bug will be fixed within 7 business days from the day we have enough information to reproduce it. While bug submissions for the "Trees for bugs" initiative will be closed by the end of October 2009, the 7-days bug fixing policy will remain for all future versions of Kentico CMS.

For both Trees for Bugs and 7-Days Bug Fixing Policy, we count only bugs that cannot be easily workarounded and that do not allow usage of some particular feature. Examples:

•The document cannot be saved correctly – bug
•The document cannot be saved correctly when using Kentico CMS API, but this can be workarounded by using some other method that works well – not a "bug" for this purpose
•The New document icon is not displayed correctly in Firefox 2.5.1 – not a "bug" for this purpose

Of course, we will fix all bugs reported, but the "minor bugs" will be fixed in the next release (version 5.0 at the end of 2009).

Introducing Stimulsoft Reports

Did it become necessary for you to build reports? You created them in Word, Excel, used special programming packages. It took so much time, efforts. You were nervous, suffered from insomnia. Deadline was near but your work was not complete. Finally, you got some result. But it did not meet your expectations. But reports were not good. And it was impossible to say yourself – yes, that’s exactly what I wanted, that’s exactly what my client wants. In fact, there are no hopeless situations. As they say, the one, who owns the information, owns the world.

Stimulsoft Company, a leading manufacturer of software for data processing and analysis, announces the release of version 2009.2 for products Stimulsoft Reports.Net, Stimulsoft Reports.Web, Stimulsoft Reports Designer.Web, Stimulsoft Reports.Wpf. As one can see from product names, Stimulsoft Reports.Net is used to generate reports from various data sources and can be used in Windows Forms and in ASP.NET, Stimulsoft Reports.Web is the reporting tool for creating reports in Web, Stimulsoft Reports.Wpf is the best tool for creating applications on the base of Windows Presentation Foundation technology, Stimulsoft Reports Designer.Web is the reports designer for Web.

In general, Stimulsoft Reports is the line of reporting tools which can be used for rendering reports on different platforms. Reports are fully compatible with all Stimulsoft reporting tools. In other words, if you have created a report in Stimulsoft Reports.Net, then it can be opened and edited in both Stimulsoft R!eports.Web and Stimulsoft Reports .WPF. Do you think that there are reports which cannot be created? There is nothing impossible with Stimulsoft Reports. Great numbers of enhancements in products make them simpler and more flexible.

What are the changes in version 2009.2?

First of all, it is necessary to say about Stimulsoft Reports.Web reports viewer – WebViewerFx. This component is developed using the Flex technology and used to view reports. WebViewerFx has well thought-out, user-friendly interface, feature-rich, and, at last, it is good-looking. Using WebViewerFx it is possible to view reports, change report zoom. It allows printing reports. WebViewerFx can save reports to more than 20 different file formats. The viewer Demo is available at http://webfx.stimulsoft.com/WebViewerFx.aspx .

Stimulsoft Reports now supports additional 2 new export formats. These are SVG and MS PowerPoint. Royal Mail 4-state that is used for automatic mail sorting was also included. Starting with version 2009.2 reports can be saved in encrypted format. The choice of supported languages has been expanded with Arabic, making the product accessible to more people in their native language.  Stimulsoft Reports.Web v2009.2, Stimulsoft Reports.Wpf v2009.2, and Stimulsoft Reports Designer.Web v2009.2 support cross-tabs. Also some errors of previous versions were corrected. This made the products more robust.

Read more about all changes in products at http://www.stimulsoft.com/ru/AllNews.aspx. The site page http://www.stimulsoft.com/FeaturesByProducts.aspx describes the distinguishing features of the product.

Additional information on Stimulsoft Reports.Net, documentation, Flash tutorials, as well as its free evaluation copy is available at http://www.stimulsoft.com

P.S. "From time to time we are surprised at our products possibilities, – says Jan Kowal, a technical support manager. – When we see reports, created by our clients, only two questions we ask ourselves – is it possible in Stimulsoft Reports? …is it possible in our product? "

Product Review: TeeChart for .NET

The ASP.NET Chart control provided by Microsoft may not suit the requirements of all developers, as many prefer to implement advanced out-of-box functionalities for their projects.

I recently happened to test-drive TeeChart, www.steema.com/products/teechart/net, and was surprised to see that this chart control contained many charting features. Developed by Spain-based Steema Software, www.steema.com, the product is available in Lite and Professional editions. The Lite version has fewer features than the Professional edition but is suitable for small projects. The product enables a developer to build applications for ASP.NET but Windows Forms and projects that target .NET Compact Framework.

The vendor provides a fully functional limited trial license that you can use to explore Teechart’s features. The Lite edition ships with only the standard chart types, including Line, Bar, Area, Pie, FastLine, Horiz.Area, Horiz.Bar, and Horiz.Line charts. The following screenshot shows the standard chart styles.

Telerik and Imaginet Resources Introduce Free Developer Team Management Tools Built with RadControls for WPF

Telerik, a leading vendor of development tools and user interface components for .NET, today introduced TFS Work Item Manager (Beta)and TFS Project Dashboard (Beta), a new class of developer workload and resource management applications built with RadControls for WPF by Imaginet Resources Corp. Inspired by agile development methodologies, the free tools are designed to facilitate project progress visualization, drastically reduce project overhead and enhance accountability for development teams working with Microsoft’s Team Foundation Server. Since the TFS Work Item Manager and TFS Project Dashboard have been used extensively internally at Telerik and Imaginet for over six months with great results, development teams can immediately utilize these tools and see the same benefits.

“Telerik’s RadControls for WPF suite provided an amazingly flexible foundation for the TFS Work Item Manager and TFS Project Dashboard tools, allowing the team to quickly implement a user experience that was fresh and intuitive. In addition, Telerik’s mature software engineering practices truly inspired the team to find better ways to visualize the software construction process as well as help to rethink how to update Microsoft Team System work items," said Joel Semeniuk, Imaginet Co-CEO. "This partnership has resulted in a work item management tool for all members of the software team as well as a rich project feedback platform inspired by highly efficient manufacturing processes.”

Brought to life by Imaginet’s extensive expertise in Application Lifecycle Management (ALM), and influenced by Telerik internal development processes, TFS Work Item Manager is aimed to help teams be more agile in their day to day work. TFS Work Item Manager leverages the powerful capabilities of Microsoft’s Team Foundation Server to help developers access and alter all their tasks in a visually appealing and user-friendly way. With this innovative and easy to use platform, teams will also enjoy improved collaboration resulting in less time needed for managing work items, reports, and cross-team efforts. In these lean times where development teams are being asked to do more with less, the TFS Work Item Manager helps free up more developer time to actually write code, not manage what they have to do.

TFS Project Dashboard assists the coordination of teams responsibilities even further. This unique stand-alone console connects to Team Foundation Server and pulls workload data to be displayed as various widgets. The application shows all significant indicators in real time at a glance including build history, recent check-ins, assigned tasks, bug history, and more. The instant and accurate reports allow for improved accountability of personal tasks, workloads and release schedules. The TFS Project Dashboard increases team transparency and is designed to end the question from management of "what are we doing” or “who broke the build?"

"TFS Work Item Manager and TFS Project Dashboard are an excellent demonstration of how RadControls for WPF can be used to build key line of business applications in an efficient and effective manner," said Vassil Terziev, Telerik Co-CEO. “Furthermore, these applications are not just a showcase but ready-to-use tools that will aid developers in release schedule planning. Our development teams use the tools internally which also helped to built in them some of Telerik development best practices. We are happy to share yet another free productivity tool with the developer community."

Review: SQL Server 2008 for Developers

As always, Murach publishing updates their books as and when a new version of the software is released. SQL Server 2008 for Developers is an updated book of its 2005 edition. The book consists of 22 chapters divided into five sections providing solid coverage of SQL Server 2008. The book looks similar to that of its 2005 edition except the content and syntaxes targets 2008.

Inside the Book

Section 1 provides a crisp introduction to relational databases including various SQL statements. It also demonstrates the usage of SQL with the help of an ADO.NET application. The section also provides the usage of various aspects of SQL Server Management Studio. The chapters in section 2 provide a detailed coverage of Summary query, Subquery, Datatypes and functions. You will learn the procedure involved with the retrieval of data from tables and also the various aspects involved with inserting, updating and deletion of data.

While Section 3 provides a comprehensive coverage of database design and its usage and implementation with SQL Server Management Studio, Section 4 examines the working of Views, Scripts, Stored Procedures, Functions, Triggers, Cursors, XML and BLOBS including management of transactions, locking and database security.

Section 5 provides a brief overview of CLR integration including the usage of CLR Stored procedure, functions, triggers, aggregate function and user defined types. I hope these topics will be useful for advanced developers. The book includes three appendixes including a list of coding and syntax conventions. I would suggest the author provides a list of errors which may occur during the installation and usage of SQL Server 2008.

Each section begins with a detailed introduction followed by relevant syntax, examples, and screenshot of output and ends with a concise description in bulleted format. I feel readers will find it easy to go through the bulleted list rather than reading a lengthy paragraph. The book will be useful only if you have time to go through detailed content provided with each concept.

The book will be useful for instructors who impart training for students and I would suggest computer training centers keep a copy of the book on their library bookshelves. This book will not be useful for advanced developers and database administrators who are already well versed with SQL Server 2008. I would suggest the author provides a list of new features included with SQL Server 2008 so that developers can compare it with SQL Server 2005.

Conclusion

If you have read the previous edition of the book then you should buy the new edition to update yourself. From my point of view, it is always better to refer to a book rather than spending time online to get information about syntax updates and also to know about the new features included with SQL Server 2008.
