How To Install Windows 7 Without Losing Data

Though a repair (also called a refresh) will let you keep your current settings, a complete reinstall will give you a truly fresh version of Windows. Repairs are fast and easy, but they don’t fix anywhere near as many problems. The instructions below are for total reinstalls, except where noted.
Your Vendor’s Restore CD
Most computers ship with a vendor-specific restore CD rather than with a Microsoft Windows CD-ROM. (If your PC came with a Microsoft Windows CD, or if you bought a retail copy of Windows, skip to the section for your version.)
Some restore CDs give you all the options of a full Microsoft Windows CD, but with better instructions and the convenience of having all the right hardware drivers. Others can do nothing except reformat your hard drive and restore it to the condition it was in when you bought the PC. (This case is the exception I mentioned above that requires a reformat.)
If your restore CD is reformat-only, back up your data files to a network or a removable medium before reinstalling Windows. If you use Windows 98 or Me, back up C:My Documents, plus the folders inside C:Windows discussed in the 98/Me section below. If you have Windows 2000 or XP, back up C:Documents and Settings. Also back up any other folders in which you store your data files.
Windows 98 and ME CDs
These Windows versions keep some important data inside your soon-to-be-erased Windows folder, so you need to copy several of its subfolders to another location. Right-click My Computer and select Explore. Double-click the C: drive icon (in Me, you may then have to click View the entire contents of this drive). How To Install Windows 7 Rc On Boot Camp – Mac
Windows 7 from MSDN. Having missed the initial rush, I was hitting download speeds of around 1.5 mb/s on my 15 mb down FIOS connection. After I had the ISO, I figured I would avoid the nightmere of deleting and repartitioning Boot Camp and try a boot right from my newly burned Windows 7 DVD and reformat from the installer. In hindsight, it seems that Mac OS X does not recognize that there is a Windows volume as a startup disk now – only Mac OS is dispalyed in Sysytem Preferences > Startup Disk.
Windows 7 RC on Boot Camp – Mac …
Based on my previous experiences with Vista x64 installs on my MacBook Pro, I went to a very useful post I had bookmarked on getting the ISO to be bootable (after some digging, this other post outlines basically the same thing). And sure enough, it was even updated for Windows 7. If you do this right off the bat, you won’t see the “Select CD-ROM boot type” with no way to make a selection.
Windows 7 RC on Boot Camp – Mac …
I reformatted my NTFS drive for a clean install of Windows 7, and the install proceeded without a hangup [insert your look of surprise here]. I followed that up with an install of the regular Boot Camp drivers from Apple on my OS X CD (version 2.01) – you can also download them via a torrent – and then the Boot Camp x64 update from Apple (2.1).
After installing Boot Camp, what happened next completely blew my mind – EVERYTHING WORKED. This was a great releif, since after every Vista x64 install I found my WiFi non-functional (had to download my own Atheros drivers) and the ATi graphics driver was sketchy (fixed with modtool). In my opinion, Microsoft did a great job of playing nice with Apple drivers this time around – they even show a nice message in the event that a driver is unsupported as opposed to the blue screen common with Vista.Windows 7 from MSDN. Upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate easily with Windows Anytime Upgrade
Nowadays, laptops ships with either Windows 7 Basic Edition or Premium. Developers doesn’t link any of these editions and they prefer to install Windows 7 Ultimate which contains whole lot of features and enhancements.
