About two months ago, John Resig and I met at Café Algiers in Harvard square to discuss how Microsoft can contribute to the jQuery project. Today, Scott Guthrie announced in his second-day MIX keynote that Microsoft is throwing its weight behind jQuery and making it the primary way to develop client-side Ajax applications using Microsoft technologies.
What does this announcement mean?
It means that Microsoft is shifting its resources to invest in jQuery. Developers on the ASP.NET team are now working full-time to contribute features to the core jQuery library. Furthermore, we are working with other teams at Microsoft to ensure that our technologies work great with jQuery.
We are contributing to the open-source jQuery project in the exact same way that any other company or individual from the community can contribute to jQuery. We are writing proposals, submitting the proposals to the jQuery forums, and revising the proposals in response to community feedback. The jQuery team can decide to reject or accept any feature that we propose.
Any feature that Microsoft contributes to jQuery will be platform neutral. In other words, Microsoft contributions will benefit PHP and RAILS developers just as much as they benefit ASP.NET developers. Microsoft contributions to jQuery will improve the web for everyone.
Contributing Support for Templates to jQuery Core
Our first proposal concerns templating. We want to contribute support for templates to jQuery so that JavaScript developers can use jQuery to easily display a set of database records. You can read our templating proposal here:
http://wiki.github.com/nje/jquery/jquery-templates-proposal
You can download and play with our prototype for templating here:

The following code illustrates how you can use a template to display a set of products in a bulleted list:
It’s hard to stand out in the crowded field of defraggers, but SmartDefrag is able to do so with an unexpected twist.
Along with quick analysis and scans, SmartDefrag boasts an automated defragger that continually defrags the files that you use the most, and does it without becoming a persistent drag on your system resources. When running in the background, the program only eats up 14MB of RAM, so it’s possible to run it smoothly on older machines.
Other features we like include a scheduler you can set up to defrag whenever you want and some customization features if you want the program to start when Windows loads or right before logging off. You also can set it to shutdown your computer when it’s done defragging your hard drives and partitions.
Overall, if you would like a handy defragger with options for scheduling and more, this is a great defragger for both novices and more experienced users.
Visit http://download.cnet.com/Smart-Defrag/3000-2094_4-10759533.html to download the product.

Visual Studio 2010 or VS 2010 is one of the powerful Integrated Development Environment (IDE) ever developed by Microsoft. Even though the beta version was a big hit, testers reported sluggish performance compared to VS2008, buggy or missing functionality, issues with memory consumption and stability concerns. Those issues caused Microsoft to push back the intended March launch event, and release the public RC build.
Testers who downloaded Release Candidate version have reported good feedback and indicated that it is much more faster and has lot of performance improvements. The VS2010 launch event, planned for April 12 at DevConnections, is not confirmed as the date of the VS2010/.NET 4 RTM, although Microsoft would like to release the new development environment in that timeframe. The timing of the RTM “partly depends” on the developer feedback that Microsoft receives on the VS2010/ .NET 4 RC, according to Guthrie.
In VS2010 Beta 2, many developers reported issues when working with XAML and Windows Presentation Foundation and Silverlight. The VS2010 RC supports Silverlight 3.0 apps. Silverlight 4.0, still in beta, is not supported in this release.
“We will be adding VS 2010 RC support for SL4 with the next public Silverlight 4 drop,” explained Guthrie. “If you are doing active Silverlight 4 development today we recommend staying with the VS10 Beta 2 build for now.”
The VS2010 RC can be installed on machines with VS2005 and VS2008, but you need to remove VS2010 Beta 2 and .NET 4 Beta 2, according to Microsoft. MSDN subscribers can download the RC of VS2010 and .NET 4 here.
Microsoft is also working with companies that supply widely used third-party add-ins—ReSharper, CodeRush and Whole Tomato– to ensure that the tooling works as advertised in the new IDE. “We’ve still got more work to do here but are making great progress,” said Zander.
Right now the downloads are available only to MSDN subscribers. Starting Wednesday (Feb 10th) everyone will be able to download them (regardless of whether you are a MSDN subscriber or not).

You can download cool gadgets provided by third party companies such as ObjectDesktop and also develop them if you are well versed with Windows 7 Programming.
Imagine you downloaded a file to one of your hard drive. Let it be E drive. But when you navigate to the drive you will not be able to it.
Microsoft has modified the look and feel of directories in Windows 7. But if you simply check the options you will be able to get a clue to resolve the issue. Click on the option titled “Compatibility files”. You will view the file you downloaded. I feel that this is a neat way to orgnize the look and feel of folders and files.

Snipping is a small tool which comes with Window 7. It helps you to capture a dialog, screen in a single click.
It can be activated from Start | All Programs | Accessories | Snipping Tool. There are four different ways by which you can capture the screen in Window 7.
(1) Free-form Snip: As the name indicates, you have to draw the portion of the screen which you need to capture and the tool will display it. You can then save the file in any format.
Figure 1

(2) Rectangular Snip: In this method, the tool will capture the portion of the screen that you select in rectangular format.
Figure 2

(3) Window Snip: In this format, you will have to just select the option and click on the screen. The window which is active will be captured.
Figure 3

(4) Full-screen Snip: Here the whole screen will be captured automatically. This includes Taskbar as well. Normally, I doesn’t prefer Taskbar to be captured in a screenshot. Hence, you will have to hide it from the Properties window (Right click on the Window 7 Taskbar and select Properties)
Figure 4

As soon the tool captures the active subject it will open it in a new Window. You can modify properties using the options provided. Moreover, the tool automatically embed a small watermark when you capture a web page using Window Snip.
Microsoft provides new tools and features in Windows 7. Although the snipping tool is not as powerful as TechSmith’s SnagIt, it can still be used in certain emergency situations and will be highly useful for those who are unable to invest to buy a license for SnagIt.
Aero shake is a new feature which has been introduced in Windows 7. The advantage of this feature is that all inactive windows will be automatically minimized upon just shaking any one of the active window.
Follow the steps mentioned below to experience the functioning of this feature
(1) Open Calculator – Type calc in “Search programs and files” box
(2) Open NotePad
(3) Open WordPad
(4) Open Paint
(5) Open a text document
(6) Open Word 2010
In order to perform a Aero shake, go to the title bar, click on it and gently shake the trackball of your mouse by clicking on the left side of the mouse. You need not have to shake the entire mouse but should not release the hand from the left side of the mouse. That’s it. The inactive windows will be minimized and pinned to the taskbar.
The above step may differ in your case if you use mouse other than Logitech Trackball. Aero shake is available only in higher versions of Windows 7 which supports Aero. You should have a minimum of 2 GB of RAM to have a smooth working experience with Aero.
Please also note that all your sticky notes will also be pinned to the Taskbar as a result of Aero Shake. In the next article, I will discuss about Sticky Notes.
