In addition to the recent addition of Gosling and Souza, Jelastic has an impressive list of advisers as mentioned below

  • Rasmus Lerdorf – Creator of the PHP programming language
  • Mark Zbikowski – Former Microsoft Architect
  • Serguei Beloussov – Parallels Founder
  • Michael ‘Monty’ Widenius – Founder of MySQL and MariaDB
  • Igor Sysoev – Founder of NGINX
  • David Blevins – Founder of Apache TomEE, OpenEJB and Geronimo

In an exclusive interview to Learnxpress, Ruslan Synytsky, Chief Executive Officer, Jelastic shared more information about the recent addition of new executives and also future plan of action.

Learnxpress: Can you share with us the difference between PaaS and IaaS?

PaaS is Platform-as-a-Service – The service delivery model allows the customer to rent virtualized servers and associated services for running existing applications or developing and testing new ones.

IaaS is Infrastructure-as-a-Service is a provision model in which an organization outsources the equipment used to support operations, including storage, hardware, servers and networking components. The service provider owns the equipment and is responsible for housing, running and maintaining it. The client typically pays on a per-use basis.

Jelastic has combined the two technologies to create Jelastic Cloud via Platform-as-Infrastructure, the integration of Platform-as-a-Service ease of use (developers productivity) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service flexibility (agility), delivering a scalable, manageable and highly available public, private and hybrid cloud.

Learnxpress: What benefit does Jelastic get with the addition of James Gosling and Bruno Souza?

James Gosling will bring expertise and advice regarding the Java in the cloud, marketing and business strategies. He has very strong expertise in business development and excellent advice on important board meeting topics. James will bring great Influence the board.¬† It’s a positive for Jelastic to have someone on the board who understands the technology to help with convincing and compelling investors.

Bruno will provide an in-depth analysis on our platform, suggest ways we can improve, obvious challenges we need to address and continue to engage the Java community in his unique and friendly way.

Learnxpress: Does Jelastic have any plans to engage James Gosling in any other role other than Independent Director?

Not at this stage. We are so fortunate to have him in any capacity and he is very busy with his work with Liquid Robotics. Any attention or time from James Gosling is a valued gift.

Learnxpress: Can you share with us percentage of users who deployed Java apps via Jelastic?

Approximately 53% of our users are Java developers. The addition of James and Bruno means that Jelastic is gaining even more in-depth coverage and analysis of Java features on our always transforming and improving platform – and we can continue to focus and grow Java technology.

Learnxpress: How popular is Jelastic compared to Microsoft Azure?

To compare Jelastic with Microsoft Azure is not really ideal as we are providing quite different services. Jelastic is a vendor and we do not provide hosting by itself. We offer the service to the hosting companies who install Jelastic on top of their hardware and then share it among developers.

Jelastic offer an on-premise PaaS and IaaS solution in one combination. And Azure provides only on-premise IaaS. We offer out-of-the-box support of Java, PHP, Ruby, Python, Node.js and with Azure you need to make lots of manual settings to get, for example, your Java app up and running. The installation of Azure takes days or even months, and Jelastic can be installed in just hours.

So popularity varies among different kind of customers as everything depends on what the user is searching for.

Learnxpress: Does  Jelastic have any plan to provide support for .NET Framework?

Yes, this will be supported by the end of this year. We also introduced Ruby, Node.js and Python support this year.
